The Best Actress race has always been exciting, and something to look forward to. A wide variety of female roles have brought their players to the red carpet at the Kodak and certainly to the podium to pick up their statues.
This year's race for the women would be no different.I t would be hard to predict the whole line-up this early , but a try wouldnt hurt . The nominees as I see them as of now are the following.
1. Kate Winslet - Revolutionary Road
The biggest movie of the 1997-1998 season starred two up and coming actors; Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet.10 years later, Sam Mendes reunities these two stars in a perios piece set in the 1950s of suburban America. Kate winslet is a great actress , and with a director like Sam Mendes who happens to be her husband , a nomination is waiting by default. She has 5 nominations already to her credit. Would the 6th time be the charm and would she win or should she wait because she might still be young for the Academy ? I personally hope its Kate this time around but I have to see the movie first !
2. Meryl Streep - Doubt
Meryl Streep is the queen of the Silver Screen , no denying that . The movie Doubt is based upon a play by the same name and is directed by John Patrick Shanley . She stars in a very oscar-baity role as a nun who discovers that a priest has been having, well lets just say ,less than appropriate conduct with one of the kids who go to church.
3.Nicole Kidman - Australia
Nicole Kidman stars in this picture by Baz Luhrman, as a women who has inherited a ranch and tries to fend it off from thiefs, colonists, and other random characters amidst the bombing of Darwin.Last Kidman starred in a picture directed by Luhrman, she was nominated (Moulin Rouge). Will she be nominated this time around ?
4. Angelina Jolie - The Exchange (otherwise known as the Changeling)
Lets face it- The Academy loves Eastwood's leading ladies.Hilary Swank anyone ? Angeline stars as a mother of a kidnapped son in the 30s.When she gets him back, she starts suspecting that the son is not really hers ?! hmmm .After the snub with last year's A Mighty Heart, will the Academy change their opinion this time around ?
5. Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married
Anne Hathaway has started forging a status in Hollywood. The Devil Wears Prada, Brokeback Mountain , you name it.In this stint, she is directed by Jonathan Demme (who has been very kind to his leading ladies) as a fresh from rehab alcoholic who attends her sisters wedding and the sabotage begins. It has recieved good reviews from the TIFF ! We just have to wait and see
Other possible contenders :
Julianne Moore - Blindness
Kate Beckinsale - Nothing but the truth
Keira Knightly - The Duchess
Sally Hawkins- Happy Go Lucky
Scarlett Johansson - Vicky Christina Barcelona
Until a later post - Peace
