On the current state of things in AIESEC Bahrain

OK .So I got elected as LC VP BD in AIESEC Bahrain .To those who are not familiar with AIESEC terms , it is an awesome title for a team leader who handles business development and external relations.

I come halfway through the term, and I am trying my best to do a decent job .However I come to know that we still have to raise, match and realise 3 internships before Jan 31st in order to become a full member country .Oops .Shit .Damn . You say it .

So basically what it all means is this : Myself, the MC VP BD and the BD team have to work it like crazy or whatever MC teams did before would basically go down the drain.

Things have been going fine so far. I have an awesome coach /colleague who is just simply great . Meetings are being secured .And we have raised our 2nd Internship already. We just have to raise a 3rd one and match all of them . I just hope that this all would end by december and we can sleep peacefully.

With Bridging the Gap on the other hand , things havent been working like they are supposed to .What bothers me , is that I took chances with certain decisions , and they didnt quite turn out like they are supposed to be .This is turning into a stage of deep frustration. However, I believe that good things come to those who wait .I will wait and my hope continues .And I think I have learnt my lesson .

Dont think for a second that you can be a superhero , darling , because you ain't !

On turning 21

I recently turned 21 . It is huge ! At first I really thought it made no difference whatsoever , you know aside from being 'legal ' , ' a year closer to death ' or whatever similar nonsense that people say .

But really , I came to realise that I actually feel old.I dont know .This to me represents a mark , a step , a threshold that has been crossed . I can no longer been a teenager, even if I wanted to .I can no longer be considered a university student no more, because once I graduate in a few months, that would be it .I would be starting my real life , with a real job, and real responsibilites to take care of .

An awesome memory that I had of this day was a great gathering with my friends for a nice dinner .I wished though that the rest of the people who didnt show up were there , but it didnt happen . Thanks to everyone who sent me a message on facebook , my mobile or my email. I am also thankful for a friend who made an international call to wish me a happy birthday . That I will always remember . I would also cherish the "1001 movies you have to see before you die" guide . AWESOME !

I had a number of plans for the year .And I have a lot of options too .But really , I came to realise that it would be a bit too early to plan what to do in July , when it is only October.I think I would take each thing , as it comes .Slowly and patiently.

I have a lot of good expectations for this year. But as a friend of mine once said :"Expectations always ruin things " .So , I have decided to go with the flow this year , and see where life would take me this time around.

On running through Life

Opportunities in life come up as fast as they go away. And the thing is you are almost never certain that the decisions that you have made are always right. And probably, there might be a time when you see fit to jump on a new bandwagon ! Or just letting go and sticking to whatever vehicle you are running at the moment ?

So the question really , is simple. Is life about the chances you take ? Or is it about the choices you make ?

But then again, I question whether I want to run the same race, a race so consuming and difficult; that it looks like a marathon in the Bharaini desert, except it is not a relay .It is just a one man's show. Or it has been ... unitl a while. But also,I am full of hope that with new runners on board, we probably can run through the finish line .. for once, as a team !

So much expectations, so much hard work , and really , I am nothing more than a little player in a junior league . Hell , I aint Usian Bolt yet ! It is going to take sometime . Patience

On Movies- Best Actress Predictions 09

The Best Actress race has always been exciting, and something to look forward to. A wide variety of female roles have brought their players to the red carpet at the Kodak and certainly to the podium to pick up their statues.

This year's race for the women would be no different.I t would be hard to predict the whole line-up this early , but a try wouldnt hurt . The nominees as I see them as of now are the following.

1. Kate Winslet - Revolutionary Road

The biggest movie of the 1997-1998 season starred two up and coming actors; Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet.10 years later, Sam Mendes reunities these two stars in a perios piece set in the 1950s of suburban America. Kate winslet is a great actress , and with a director like Sam Mendes who happens to be her husband , a nomination is waiting by default. She has 5 nominations already to her credit. Would the 6th time be the charm and would she win or should she wait because she might still be young for the Academy ? I personally hope its Kate this time around but I have to see the movie first !

2. Meryl Streep - Doubt

Meryl Streep is the queen of the Silver Screen , no denying that . The movie Doubt is based upon a play by the same name and is directed by John Patrick Shanley . She stars in a very oscar-baity role as a nun who discovers that a priest has been having, well lets just say ,less than appropriate conduct with one of the kids who go to church.

3.Nicole Kidman - Australia

Nicole Kidman stars in this picture by Baz Luhrman, as a women who has inherited a ranch and tries to fend it off from thiefs, colonists, and other random characters amidst the bombing of Darwin.Last Kidman starred in a picture directed by Luhrman, she was nominated (Moulin Rouge). Will she be nominated this time around ?

4. Angelina Jolie - The Exchange (otherwise known as the Changeling)

Lets face it- The Academy loves Eastwood's leading ladies.Hilary Swank anyone ? Angeline stars as a mother of a kidnapped son in the 30s.When she gets him back, she starts suspecting that the son is not really hers ?! hmmm .After the snub with last year's A Mighty Heart, will the Academy change their opinion this time around ?

5. Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married

Anne Hathaway has started forging a status in Hollywood. The Devil Wears Prada, Brokeback Mountain , you name it.In this stint, she is directed by Jonathan Demme (who has been very kind to his leading ladies) as a fresh from rehab alcoholic who attends her sisters wedding and the sabotage begins. It has recieved good reviews from the TIFF ! We just have to wait and see

Other possible contenders :

Julianne Moore - Blindness
Kate Beckinsale - Nothing but the truth
Keira Knightly - The Duchess
Sally Hawkins- Happy Go Lucky
Scarlett Johansson - Vicky Christina Barcelona

Until a later post - Peace

On Movies : Best Actor Predictions 09

The summer season is over. It probably is about time to reconsider, and update any predictions for the best actor line-up of this Oscar year.

This is what, as of now, think will emerge in the line up of the best actor statuette. Some are very strong contenders, and some need more press and marketing. But the truth is we dont really know anything .

1. Brad Pitt- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Brad Pitt, plays a man who is born at the old age of 80 and starts aging backwards.Could this be the role that would impress the academy finally ?The movie is helmed by the awesome David Fincher . I find Brad Pitt an actor who is underrated and overdue. He has managed to turn decent and praise-worthy performances in a number of movies such as last year's Jesse James,Babel, Snatch etc.He is going supporting in the Coens' brothers dark comedy Burn after reading which hopefully would prove to be added support.

2. Benicio Del Toro - Che
In his latest movie, Steven Soderbergh casts Benicio Del Toro as the legendary CHE. Iconic figures from real life have been a hit with the academy before .It has worked a number of times into getting actors nominated (Anthony Hopkins-Nixon, Joaquin Phoenix - Johnny Cash ) and possible winners (Jamie Foxx - Ray Charles, Forest Whittaker - Idi Amin) .Would this be a chance to get Benicio Del Toro a statue as a leading actor

3. Sean Penn - Milk
Sean Penn stars as Harvey Milk, San Francisco's first elected gay official. Would the academy give him a nod or would it be a controversial a la Brokeback Mountain ?

4. Frank Langella - Frost/Nixon
Frank Langella is a Hollywood veteran who has done amazing work in the past.He is starring in this movie as none other than President Nixon, and he is being interrogated by Martin Frost .Veterans get their overdues , right ? Wrong ... ask Peter O'Toole (Venus)... or go Supporting, you have a better chance !

5 . Viggo Mortensen - The Road
Viggo Mortensen stars in this movie based on a Cormac McCarthy book as a dad in a post-apocalyptic Earth in search of something, and trying hard to keep his son safe. Will additional turns in post-war movie Good , and Appaloosa ( a western helmed by Ed Harris ) support this actor, or cause him a split of votes. Also, does he has enough star power to take him all the way to the Kodak Theatre in March next year ?

Other potential contenders, who might surface later this year :
Leonardo DiCaprio - Revolutionary Road
Jamie Foxx - The Soloist
Hugh Jackman - Australia
Daniel Craig- Defiance
Phillip Seymor Hoffman -Synecdoche ,NewYork / Doubt

Until a later post , Peace !

On Life : As of 31st of August

It has been a while since I last updated my little blog.More than two months to be precise .Alot has happened ,let me tell ya ...

I started working in a very prestigious bank for a short two month internship . I liked the atmosphere over there, and it really was an eye opener as to what field I should pursue in the future . I know for a fact it might not be accounting . Yeah, see I told you . I can hear the unexcited shudders. It might be private equity though .. or even hedge funds .. may be islamic finance .. Alot of options all around , 1 year to graduate and I am still no way near my final decision. I think I should deal with it when ever the need arises.
I have also enjoyed the company of other fellow interns ... smart, party-loving, politically-indulged, carefree, cant-be-bothered, at times silly but always fun !

I also spent some time thinking about my 1 year internship abroad, where to go , and what would be the best experience I could have . Countries ranging from Switzerland to Singapore have crossed my mind, and at least this , I have an answer to ... not confused that much , thank God!

I also watched a number of movies ... yup ...the Dark Knight is that awesome movie of the summer that everyone says it is ! But that requires another post . Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda were good too, with very possible best animation Oscar nods in the way . Besides these good movies, I have seen something that I can only be classified as a major waste of time , and of 3 BD I am not getting back ... Yeah, its that mummy movie set in China ... seriously ! IN CHINA ! Never mind !

I have had good times with friends who left, friends who will leave and friends who came back.

I have also went back on working on the Bridging The Gap project that will happen this year as part of AIESEC's Initiatives in Bahrain. All looks good, with different people on board.Cant wait to see what will happen!

Until a future post , Peace !

On Movies: The Kite Runner

Almost a year back, I was walking in the Amsterdam Airport with a friend, and I noticed this book that apparently was creating all the buzz. My friend was looking for something to read in order to kill time on the 8 hour flight to Washington D.C, so I recommended that she buy the book ; Heck it might be a good read.I didnt , however ! I disregarded it as something that was trying to make money of the recent Afghanistan craze, like many other odd authors that I do not care to name !

I got the book when I got to the States. Surprisingly, the book was by far away from all standards of airport trash that you get.I really liked this one .It was a moving tale of redemption forgiveness and childhood memories that touched the heart. In a nutshell , I thought the Kite Runner was a brilliant, beautiful and simple story.

Khaled Hussaini does impress, and soon after I began looking for the next story in line by this writer, A 1000 Splendid Suns, which I began to read, but had to stop due to finals( ugh !) . And so far it has that same tone, that same language , that same ease that made its predecessor a success.

I came to know that the Kite Runner was being optioned to be made into a movie, and who was directing ?None other than Marc Forster , the guy who brought to us greats like Monster's Ball and Finding Neverland .

Aided by a scribe like David Benioff, it seemed like a pretty darn interesting crew. However, a lot of controversy ensued . There was a particular scene that generated a lot of ho-hum that was uncalled for because it was handled very carefully. The movie was banned in Afghanistan, and then later in the Arab World . The child actors had to flee the country .

I managed to get my hand on the DVD , around 3 months back and I watched the movie.I had a fear that a lot of the material in the book would be cut or lost in translation. Here is my verdict !The movie is great. I liked it . I t was one of those good Foriegn pictures that you see once in a while ! That being said ; I have a few remarks about the movie. The movie flows smoothly at the begining but, then feels rushed as soon as Amir and his dad flee to the US. The pace wasnt constant to me. Also , the character exploration could have been greater !

The movie showcased good supporting turns by Shaun Toub and Homayoun Ershadi and decent performances by the child actors. The soundtrack ,by Alberto Iglesias, is very oriental and also managed to snag a nod from the golden globes.

I enjoyed this movie -viewing experience , and I look forward to seeing 1000 Splenid Suns being made into a movie !

On Keira Knightley and Corsets

Word is around the web , that a new King Lear production is about to head into production.

The U.K. newspaper The Telegraph reports that Anthony Hopkins will play the tragic King Lear , with Gwyneth Paltrow as Cordelia’s older sister, Regan and Keira Knightley will play Cordelia, one of the most famous Shakespearean icons of Literature , the youngest daughter who dearly loves her father. No word has yet surfaced on the casting of Cordelia's eldest sister but with this casting so far, I am completely on board trusting the judgement off the producers.

Keira Knightley , yet another time ,jumps to the past to don another couple corsets and petti-coats that made her famous , whether by playing Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice or snaggin the role of Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Carribean franchise .

It seems that she has been doing these period dramas either for a good reason or that she simply loves wearing uncomfortable clothes(not that I am complaining). She next stars in the Duchess, yet another period piece directed by Saul Dibb where she plays , guess what, yeah thats right Georgiana , the DUCHESS of Devonshire alongside Ralph Fiennes, who plays the Duke of Devonshire.

The Duchess has been slated for a release in the fall of 2008.No word has yet surfaced on the release date of King Lear , but I think we can expect it around Oscar season of next year (2009).

It has been a while before Hollywood has given us another good Shakepearen adaptation.Producers promise to have epic battle scenes, so it is not only a tragic family drama (which I dont mind at all) that will go on for 2+ hours. The audience are in for a good experience I assume.Let us hope this production will match expectations .

A last thoguht ! Kiera Knightley in a corset . I am in ...

On EB Elections of AIESEC Bahrain

Few days back were the elections of the Local Committe EB (Executive Board) of AIESEC in Bahrain .I decided that after all the time that I have spent in the organisation, the commitment and the efforts, the different teams that I worked in and running a PBOX( Bridging the Gap) , that it was about time that I would run for LCP and that I was qualified enough to see where the organisation is heading.

It made sense to me, seeing that I even wanted to get involved in the organisation in a much bigger role and really influence a lot of the things that are happening.A huge part of my motivation to run was to see to it that OCPs of IBXPs get the appropriate support from the LC, create a role for alumni of the organisation, strengthen ties with different entities in the market and work on increasing exchanges. The rest was other pure technicalities.

Some of my friends told me to run for other VP positions, which I would assume would have been a bit less challenging than this role. However , I decided not to.Why would I ? I responded. The point of me running for LCP was that I wanted to ensure that I left a legacy behind, something to be remembered with ; and being LCP, myself along with my EB could greatly influence the course that this organisation is taking and through that create an impact on society.

I would be lying if I told you that everything is fine with rainbows, flowers and roses. But truth is I was a little disappointed, and I believe that it is something I am entitled to.However, what made this experience one great damn one, is that I ran against one of my good friends, who I know will take good care of the organisation. It is in safe hands !

I learnt to accept "failure", face rejection and refocus .I am sort of confused on what to expect or do next.I am still running Bridging the Gap, still working on it and will continue to do until it is a success. Maybe then , this would be the legacy I leave in AIESEC Bahrain. I know I pray for that everyday.Raising traineeships for the LC has been a pain in the a** already , so it is even harder when you do it for a PBOX with a particular sector in mind.

Another good friend of mine reminded me that things happen for a reason, and of that I will be constantly reminded.Lets wait for tomorrow and see what hopes and new experiences it will bring along with the unfolding of a new day.

Atleast now, I would have the chance of going to Malta on a CEED with no complications regarding absence in the LC and ,I dont have to worry about IC Brazil day and night , wondering where I might get sponsorship from.

Every coin has two faces ,I guess !

On the Upcoming Oscar Season 08-09 Part 2

So back on track ....

I have posted earlier about some movies to look out for next season , and this is part two of that post. These are other 5 movies to look out for; that are potentailly award magnets for next season.

6.The Changeling

Clint Eastwood returns with a star vehicle movie starring Angelina Jolie, which is based on a true story about a woman whose child was abducted in the 1920s and the government corruption she met in her despair. The movie aparently is now called the Exchange instead. Whatever that is but to now it sounds like a spy drama instead.

The movie has recieved rave reviews in Cannes where it competed alongside other critically reviewed movies .Special Prize "Prix de 61st Festival de Cannes" was awarded to both Catherine Deneuve for her participation in Un Conte de Noel (A Christmas Tale) (by Arnaud Depleschin) AND Clint Eastwood for Changeling.
7. Frost/Nixon
Frost/Nixon is another dram athat might be sort of equivalent to the efforts of the makers of The Queen a couple years ago.It provides insights into the life of President Nixon(played by Frank Langella ) through dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost(Martin Sheen) and former president Richard Nixon. Ron Howard is directing and Peter Morgan who has written both the Last King of Scotland and The Queen joins as the movie scribe.

8. MILK

According to IMDB ,Milk is the story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk, a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by San Francisco Supervisor Dan White. It stars Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, James Franco, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna, Emile Hirsch and many other actors .It is directed by Gus Van Sant who brought to us the likes of Good Will Hunting and To Die For. Milk will make the festival rounds in the fall, and with luck, will have a wide release soon thereafter. This is a very highly anticipated movie that has been generating a lot of buzz, but will Hollywood succumb to the gay card or will it pull another BrokeBackMountain-esque rejection.

9. Blindness

Based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago, Blindness tells the story of a doctor's wife who becomes the only person with the ability to see in a town where everyone is struck with a mysterious case of sudden blindness. She feigns illness in order to take care of her husband as her surrounding community breaks down into chaos and disorder. Fernando Mierelles directs Julianne Moore in this picture that has recieved mixed reviews in Cannes so far and was nominated for the Golden Palme. We have to wait and see.

10. Synecdoche, New York

In his first effort as a director, Charlie Kauffman writes and directs his script about a theater director (Phillip Seymor Hoffman) who struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he attempts to create a life-size replica of New York inside a warehouse as part of his new play.Supporting cast includes actresses such as Catherine Keener, Samantha Morton,Michelle Williams, Emily Watson and others. This remains the most mysterious sort of movie so far.We will have to wait and see

On The Dark Knight

It has been quite a long time since I wrote in this blog.I have had midterms, work and other crap to attend to.

So anyway, The Dark Knight .... right ...

The Dark Knight is the much anticipated sequel to Chris Nolan' Batman Begins which brought back life to one of the iconic superheroes ever.Christain Bale reprises his role as Batman (no nipples on the suit ) with Heath Ledger as the notorious Joker, Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent, and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Daws and other actors such as Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman reprising their roles from the first movie.

This happens to be one of my most anticipated movies for the year. Not necessarily because I was such a die hard fan of Batman Begins.I like it, dont get me wrong .I thought Christopher Nolan brought depth, and reality to the characters in this saga.

However, I am even more interested in seeing what the late Heath Ledger will create of such aa complex character such as the JOKER. While Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent does not excite me as much , I will have to reserve my judgement until I see the movie.

Now, there is a possibilty, I feel that the very much hyped movie might lose momentum when the movie is released actually OR it will score big .In addition , the hype of the fans and critics may create also a possibilty that in recognition , Heath Ledger might earn a few post mortem nominations;possibly awards (Oscar nomination maybe ; fingers crossed) for best supporting actor, but also that depends on the screen time, ( I dont think of that as a factor, Ruby Dee ;American Gangster) and the depth that he would add to playing such a villain.(Javier Bardem won last year's best supporting for playing cold blooded villain in No Country for Old Men)But, this however is a summer movie and we all know that these movies havent been taken much seriously by the academy. If it would have then Michelle Pfiefer deserved a nod for her Catwoman.

In addition, Warner Brothers havent done a bad job in marketing.Least of all is the viral marketing campaign with the numerous websites online.

May is approaching, and we have to wait and see !

On Movies - The Orphanage

Guillermo del Toro is a master of his craft. He knows what he does and does it well.

I saw The Orphanage last night. It is about a woman that brings her family back to her childhood home, where she opens an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend. This movie is a foreign picture that you rarely see distributed in Bahrain so I was excited to check it out.It is directed bu Juan Antonio Bayona and produced by Guillermo Del Toro. It was a good movie, one that slipped under the radar, somehow !The story is well developed, well acted and well produced.Props go to Belén Rueda who plays Laura ,the mom.She manages to get your attention always, waiting for the next thing to happen.

This movie was sheer fantasy. While some may call it this years Pan' Labyrinth, I do not necessarily agree. They both shared the same childhood fantasy kind of elements but they are both different in their own way.

Pan's labyrinth was the thing that got me hooked up on Guillermo Del Toro's work. Now, that I liked bith movies, I am even more excited to see what kind of magic he will summon and bring to life in the Peter-Jackson-produced The Hobbit that is slated for release in two parts ; 2010 and 2011

I think with Hellbiy 2 coming up, I might as well check Hell Boy , the first part.At the begining, I just dismissed as another comic book movie but seeing Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage, I am seriously considering both.

If only Guillermo Del Toro would helm the final Harry Potter movie.I would be ONE AWESOME MOVIE, in quality ,essence, concept and style.
Wishful thinking ! Cant blame me !

On Stomp

Over the weekend, we went to the most anticipated show of Spring of Culture, (besides Fairouz obviously) and .... I tell you this was ONE HELL OF A SHOW.

We went to the first show of three. It was supposed to start at 8:30 but it took alot of time until people got settled and it finally started around 9ish. It was worth the wait.

The show starts with people cleaning the floor with broomsticks.I never, in my life, imagined that people can be quite creative with broomsticks. The sounds, the co-ordination , the comedy.Magnificent.

Then there was part with other stuff including sticks, barrels, pipes , garbage bins, garbage-bin-lids , kitchen sinks, newspapers, plastic bags .... you name it.

My favourite part was the scene when they start drumming on a wall of aluminium plates, wheel rims, bottles, etc etc. This was so creative, energetic and full of fun.

Add to that the comic relief that was contributed by a small guy from the group. He had great comedic timing. The whole group knew what they were doing and did it well.

It was a great weekend

On the upcoming Oscar Season 08-09

As most of the people who know me , I am an avid movie fan.I constantly keep in touch and put some effort in trying to predict the upcoming season.

These are some of the movies that I think would make a big splash and would be huge award magnets according to their structure, cast, script , framework , crew etc.In other words, these are movies that act as oscar bait.Maybe intentionally , maybe not.

Every week , until there are some serious award shows that filter out these movies, I am going to have a post about 5 movies that I think have a chance (small or huge) in creating a buzz .

1.Doubt

According to IMDB ,Doubt is a movie that is set at a Catholic school in the Bronx, it centers on a nun who grows suspicious when a priest begins taking too much interest in the life of a young black student. He denies the charges, and much of the script's. quick-fire dialogue tackles themes of religion, morality and authorityIs she being overly protective or not protective enough? And can she work within the system to discover the truth?
Will it be the ever fascinating Meryl Streep's chance to win her 15th nomination ... ?

Starring : Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymor Hoffman, Amy Adams, Viola Davis

Directed and written by John Patrick Shanley who brought this to the stage and won numerous awards including: the 2005 Pulitzer Prize, the 2004-2005 Drama Desk Award and the 2005 Tony Award.

With such an academy friendly script and cast, the award chances:
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Actress - Meryl Streep
Best Actor- Phillip Seymor Hoffman
Best Supporting Actress - Amy Adams

2. Australia

Baz Luhrmann brings to us another movie starring Nicole Kidman with Hugh Jackman as the male lead. The story is set in northern Australia before World War II .It is about an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch and reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand.

Baz Luhrmann's last project was 7 years ago and was by the name of Moulin Rouge .It certainly was an amazing movie , a different sort of musical of sorts, blending different songs together fitting them perfectly. It certainly earned Nicole Kidman her first nomination, the question is will it earn Jackman or Kidman any nominations this time come award season.Given the premises, if the movie is executed right, it has the potential of even being a best picture contender

Possible award Consideration:
Best Picture
Best Actress
Best Actor

3. Revolutionary Road

Sam Mendes reunites two famous lovers (Jack and Rose) 10 years later. He brings together two actors made movie stars by the mega blockbuster Titanic into another picture about a young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s . April and Frank Wheeler are a young, thriving couple living with their two children in a Connecticut suburb in the mid-1950s. Their self-assured exterior masks a creeping frustration at their inability to feel fulfilled in their relationships or careers. Frank is mired in a well-paying but boring office job and April is a housewife still mourning the demise of her hoped-for acting career. Determined to identify themselves as superior to the mediocre sprawl of suburbanites who surround them, they decide to move to France where they will be better able to develop their true artistic sensibilities, free of the consumerist demands of capitalist America. Based on a novel by Richard Yates

Sam Mendes certainly puts together a great cast including Kathy Bates(Misery, About Schmidt) and Michael Shannon(Bug, Before the Devil Knows you are Dead, World Trade Centre) in supporting roles.

Dont count ou chances of Best Picture, Best Actor,Best Actress, Best Supp.Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay

4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Brad Pit stars in this quirky drama by the talented David Fincher. The story is about aman who ages backwards with bizarre consequences. The movie is an adaptation of the 1922 short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a very unique man: the title character Button, who is born as an 80-years old man and begins aging backwards.

David Fincher who brought to us great movies like SE7EN , Fight Club and Zodiac is usually a hit and miss wonder. Will this movie be his hit with the academy and hopefully not a miss. Also, will the academy recognise Brad Pitt as something more than the glamourous pretty boy and the good actor that he is .In addition to Brad Pitt, David Ficher puts together a stellar cast including the always amazing Cate Blanchett,Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton, Julia Ormond, Elle Fanning , Jason Flemyng and Taraji P.Henson

Award Chances include best picture, actor, actress and adapted screenplay

5. THE ARGENTINE/GUERRILLA

Acclaimed Director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) creates a two part Bio Pic about legendary revolutionary leader Ernesto “Che” Guevara. The Argentine is set in 1956 when Ernesto 'Che' Guevara (Benicio Del Toro) and a band of Castro-led Cuban exiles mobilize an army to topple the regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista. Guerrilla is set in 1964, Argentine revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara (Benicio del Toro) travels to New York City to address the United Nations.

Oscar Winner Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) stars as the "Che with a supporting cast that includes Benjamin Bratt, Oscar Nominee Catalina Sandino Morino, Julia Ormond and Franka Potente.Written and Directed by Steven Sorderbergh.

This movie has all the inputs of success with the Academy. It is a biopic. They love that. And certainly if either is nominated it doesnt hurtm because Sorderbergh is directing, although I think the first part has a better chance of being nominated.

Possible Award recognition includes Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and possible best supporting nominations

This concludes the first post of many to come about next year's season.

On Spring Of Culture

On the 1st of March , I went to the first spring of culture event, the Armenian Ballet. I went there by chance , only because we were done with an AIESEC Meeting and a friend of mine told me that I should check it out. And , I am happy I did.

You see, it is not like you wake up everyday and you get exposed to all these different cool cultures. It was the Armenian Ballet and then few days later I went to a recital by a Japanese Pianist Toshiku Usui. This guy was amazing. Wild Jujubes-SHANXI HUAJIN Dance Drama Ensemble followed on the list of my experiences in this festivity .I liked it but in my opinion , it kind off dragged in the last few scenes, and honestly , the death scene in the end was such a Romeo and Juliet rip off . Apart from that, all the Spring of Culture Live Entertainment performances were good.

That is until .... I saw Jump.

This changed the standards. Man , was this show amazing, entertaining, great, delightful , funny, ...... you name it.Jump was a non verbal performance that played in different parts of the world. It is about this crazy martial arts family ,each with his own particular pecularity .You had the hot daughter, drunken uncle, hulk-esque(I dont think that is a word) son in law , old martial-arts-master grandpa etc and their seemingly ordinary life until two burglars choose to break in.This show was 2 hours long and it didnt have a single dull moment. I would see it anyday over any movie in the theatres ; a much better experience I might say.

And finally we are awaiting to go to the famous STOMP event on the 3rd which is a musical journey with players creating melodies from basic things such as trash bins , brooms and boots, combining theatre , dance and acrobatics all together.

What I like about Spring od Culture, is that it brought all these difeerent cultures together, exposing and introducing different cultures to everybody in Bahrain. You see the intellectuals as well as the non-intellectuals. The Old and the Young. It painted a mosaic of vivid colours ,each carefully handpicked from a different culture, a different ethnicity, a different background. It certainly has been a quite enriching and interesting experience. Kudos to Shaika Mai, the EDB, Culture and National Heritage and Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Co for organising a festival of this stature and grandeur .

I am certainly looking forward for next years Spring of Culture .

My First Post

Ok ... to be honest, I dont even know what I am writing . Let me just introduce myself ....

This is Ali but you all know that ... already ... kinda ... Doesnt matter !

Back to the subject .Oh speaking of subjects , have 6 of them this semester .. OOPS . This means not doing a play.Oh that is one thing I am crazy about; acting, movies, plays ... you name it .Oh and I might do an english play next semester which is unusual. That would be interesting .I have a quiz to study for and proposals to get done by the weekend . Anybody cares to do some writing ??!

Oh and that, I do not write but mostly read. What is sad though, is that for an ex-avid fan of reading, I have managed to read only 4 books since last summer.A shame, I know ... but what can I do ? Blame it on something ? OFCOURSE !

Alright, I think I will have to continue next time, I have an Info session at the office to attend .Until later
